A report of the site investigation and the archival research was published in September 1985 and delivered to the Maritime Museum of Gothenburg together with the proposal to start a marine-archaeological investigation of the wreck site. Its main purpose was education, to study and train in marine archaeology and to enable a constructive use of the Götheborg shipwreck findings to spread knowledge of the history of Gothenburg as a city and port. It was to illuminate its significance and that of the Swedish East India Company for the history and development of Sweden in the 18th century.

In April 1986, this group formed the East Indiaman Götheborg Trust to exercise responsibility for carrying on the marine excavation project. The first and most important task for the Trust was to raise funds to finance the investigation. In June 1986, the Maritime Museum of Gothenburg received the first permission to conduct an excavation from the National Board of Antiquities. The underwater work began at once, in July 1986.

In terms of events of occurrence in time-line sequence, the 250 year celebration of the founding of the Götheborg ship, the intense interest in research on the Company, combined with the interest in archeological diving led to that two years prior to the Municipality of Gothenburg signing an MoU with the city of Shanghai, 1984, saw the official start of the Wästfelt Excavation of the East Indiaman Götheborg at an underwater reef, the Hunnebåden located at the mouth of the Göta River, and the building of the replica of the ship, to be named, Götheborg III.

From the very onset of the archaeological efforts, one could already see the overlapping of spheres of influence much like facets of Metatron’s Cube with the Götheborg ship being at its core, radiating a network of connections and circular petals of influence. These petals of cooperation that spanned several industries, from education, media, national armed security (who provided the canons), art, food and beverage etc. would in future expand to encompass others.
